ABSTRACT

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the outcomes of dual growing rod treatment over a follow-up period of at least 2 years in patients with progressive pediatric spinal deformity. SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEW: The dual growing rod treatment is safe and effective in curve correction and maintenance in patients with progressive pediatric spinal deformity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2009 to 2017, 14 patients who underwent dual growing rod treatment were followed up for more than 2 years. We analyzed their demographic and radiologic data, including age at surgery, sex, diagnosis, instrumented levels, number of total operations, number of lengthening procedures, interval of lengthening, Cobb angle, thoracic kyphosis angle, lumbar lordosis angle, T1-S1 length, and complications. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 11.0±2.9 years old. There were 10 male and 4 female patients, including 8 cases of neuromuscular scoliosis, 3 cases of idiopathic scoliosis, 2 cases of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, and 1 case of congenital scoliosis. The mean follow-up period was 42.4±14.0 months. The total number of operations was 6.6±2.6. The average number of lengthening procedures was 4.3±2.3 at an interval of 6.9±2.1 months. The Cobb angle improved from 60.4°±27.9° to 33.5°±19.7° after the initial treatment and 29.1°±16.4° after the last follow-up or final fusion. The T1-S1 length increased from 328.2±57.5 mm to 388.0±64.9 mm after the initial treatment and 424.9±64.4 mm after the last follow-up or final spinal fusion. The average growth rate was 11.5 mm/year. Six patients experienced 11 complications, of which 4 were Implant-related, and 7 were Infections. CONCLUSIONS: The dual growing rod technique is an effective and relatively safe treatment in patients with progressive pediatric spinal deformity.

ABSTRACT

In the present study, a series of 13-β-elemene ester derivatives were designed and prepared, and their antioxidant activity was investigated in the H2O2-treated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Among the test compounds, the dimer compounds 5v and 5w exhibited the most potent antioxidant activity with significant ROS suppression being observed. Both compounds markedly inhibited the H2O2-induced changes in various biochemical substances, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), malonyldialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO), and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), which were superior to that of the positive control vitamin E. Further more, they did not produce any obvious cytotoxicity, but increased the viability of HUVECs injured by H2O2 in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, compound 5w, designed as a prodrug-like compound, showed improved stability relative to compound 4 in vitro.

ABSTRACT

A practical approach to the synthesis of the A, B and C-ring subunit of cyclopamine has been developed. This synthetic tactic highlights the utility of mandelate acetal-mediated resolution of the fused ring ketone (±)-4 and IBX-mediated oxidation cascades from 12 to 9. The availability of advanced intermediates from enantiomerically pure (+)-4 and 2 could provide efficient access to biologically active and structurally diverse C-nor-D-homo-steroidal alkaloids such as cyclopamine.

ABSTRACT

AIM@#In a search for new cardiovascular drug candidates, a series of novel oxime ethers derived from a natural isochroman-4-one were synthesized.@*METHOD@#Compounds 3 and 6, derived from the natural antihypertensive compound 7, 8-dihydroxy-3-methyl-isochroman-4-one (XJP), were designed and synthesized. Subsequently, a series of novel isochroman-4-one oxime ether hybrids were prepared by hybridizing various N-substituted isopropanolamine functionalities to isochroman-4-one oxime. Furthermore, β1-adrenergic blocking activities of the synthesized compounds were assayed using the isolated rat left atria.@*RESULTS@#Twenty target compounds were obtained, and the preliminary structure-activity relationships were deduced. The most promising compound Ic exhibited β1-adrenoceptor blocking activity (inhibition: 52.2%) at 10(-7) mol·L(-1), which was superior to that of propranolol (inhibition: 49.7%).@*CONCLUSION@#The results suggested that natural product XJP/isopropanolamine moiety hybrids may provide a promising approach for the discovery of novel cardiovascular drug candidates.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate the preventive effect of interleukin-18 (IL-18) gene modified mature dendritic cells (mDC) vaccine on airway inflammation in mouse asthma model.

METHODSThe asthma model was induced by injection of ovalbumin (OVA) in BALB/c mice. IL-18 gene modified mouse mature dendritic cells (mDC) were detected by flow cytometry and its capacity of inducing allogeneic T cell responses was examined by mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR). The OVA-induced asthmatic mice were randomly divided into 6 groups: PBS group, DXM group, mDC group, Ad-LacZ-mDC group, Ad-IL-18-mDC group and control group. The pathological changes in lung tissues were assayed by HE and AB-PAS staining. The numbers of inflammatory cells and percentage of eosinophils (EOS) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were counted. The levels of IFN-γ IL-4 and IL-13 in culture supernatant of splenocytes were measured by ELISA method. The percentage of CD4(+)CD25(+)Foxp3(+) Treg was assessed by flow cytometry analysis.

RESULTThe vaccine was effective in decreasing the infiltration of EOS and accumulation of airway goblet cells in lung tissues, the numbers of inflammatory cells and percentage of EOS in BALF, and the levels of IL-4 and IL-13 in culture supernatant of splenocytes, and in increasing the levels of IFN-γ in culture supernatant of splenocytes and the percentage of CD4(+)CD25(+)foxP3(+) reg.

CONCLUSIONIL-18 gene modified mDC vaccine has a preventive effect on airway inflammation in OVA-induced asthmatic mice.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore features and clinic values of LNR anatomy with multiple planar reconstruction techniques with 16-slice spiral CT at the same slice. Methods The lumbar vertebrae with normal adults of 55 cases and 23 cases with abnormal ENR caused by 8 cases with protrusion of lumbar disc, 5 cases with spinal stenosis,4 cases with malignant tumor,5 cases with trauma and 1 case with lumbar TB confirmed by operation were scanned with 16-slice spiral CT made in American GE company in routine posture of the lumbar vertebrae, reconstructed LNR with UNIX system in workstation (ADW 4.1),and analyzed their normal and abnormal anatomic manifestations at the same slice. Results All of LNR can symmetrically showed on oblique and coronal planes according to different segments:one segment from L1 to L5(55,100% ),two segments: from L1 to L2,L2 to L3 and L3 to L4(55,100% ),three segments: from L1 to L3 (49,88%),from L2to L4(46,84% )and from L3 to L5(20,36% ),four segments: from L1 to L4 (15,27% )and five segments:(8,15% ),respectively. Each LNR,including their whole shapes of passage from starting to end, direction, size, shape, tension and peripheral relationship and so on can showed clearly on oblique and coronal planes and on other planes. However, the later planes can increase LNR but decreasing numbers of LNR and especially increase very long one LNR reconstruction.Primary manifestation of all diseases can be showed on oppressing along its walking line,meanwhile,20 cases with adhesion, 14 cases with displacement,13 cases atrophy and 9 cases with increasing diameter. Conclusions Image anatomy features of full LNR with 16-slice spiral CT with the multiple plane reconstruction techniques is very ideal ways at the same slice. It is a very valuable way to make diagnosis and treatment of LNR diseases. The concept of"road sing"and showing"at the same slice"of LNR are tried to rise from in order to make foundation for studying their image.
